Mana Whaitake o Kaiteriteri
Next Event Date:
November 13 2025
This event, successfully started in Kaiteriteri in 2017 bringing together several kura (schools) from across Te tai-o-Aorere, engaging ākonga (students), whānau (families), and kaiako (teachers) through hands-on activities led by experts in their fields. It champions the biodiverse marine ecosystem and history of the area. In some instances, older students, through the tuakana teina (older students mentoring younger ones) system, are given the responsibility of running activities. The event was proudly sponsored by the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board, who generously also donate prizes for participants.
In 2023 The kura (school) year 5 and 6 teams rotated through “worth it” engagements, learning about marine biodiversity, local ecosystem inhabitants, and the area’s history through interactive, place-relevant activities. Year 7 and 8 students we engaged in a snorkeling experience around Torlese Rocks at other activities on the beach at Little Kaiteriteri. This event, is part of the nationwide “Seaweek,” aimed to inspire curiosity and a love for our moana (ocean), fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Our partnership with experts from the The Little Blue Penguin Trust, Motueka High School, Resource teachers of Māori, Coast Guard, Cawthron Institute, Nelson City Council, Otago University, and the Marine Maestro significantly enhanced the knowledge shared. Each team was scored at every station, and a prize-giving ceremony concludes the day.
