Conservation

“Nau mai haere mai ki Tasman Bay Guardians.”

Working towards a brighter future

As a group of passionate conservationists and educators, we are dedicated to improving the health of the aquatic spaces across Te Tau Ihu. We believe that effective environmental conservation projects start from the ground up, weaving together local knowledge through mātauranga Māori and scientific research. We work with kura (schools), hapori (communities), and Treaty partners to ensure action is taken to protect and enhance our natural taonga.

Education

Our environmental conservation education programmes foster a deep connection to te taiao by blending classroom learning with hands-on, inquiry-based experiences in the natural world. We aim to inspire curiosity, critical thinking and foster the practice of kaitiakitanga.

Events & Workshops

Community engagement through events and workshops creates a space for people to connect with one another and te taiao. We offer a variety of engaging events and informative workshops designed to educate, inspire, and empower our hapori (communities) in the conservation and restoration of our natural environments. Join us to learn, connect, and take action towards a brighter future.

Restoration & Monitoring

It’s time to take action, get some boots on the ground, and start the conservation mahi. After listening to the concerns and needs of the community and creating a tailored plan, we move forward with monitoring and restoration. Community-Based Freshwater Monitoring (CBFM) training, combined with citizen science platforms, helps record and share (when consented) data in a meaningful way. CBFM encompasses SHMAK (Stream Health Monitoring and Assessment Kit), eDNA, and Īnanga monitoring training and support. Restoration projects, informed by community needs and monitoring data, focus on reviving and sustaining the health of te taiao. These efforts ensure the long-term resilience and biodiversity of our precious natural habitats.
