Drains to Harbour - Storm Water Education
The Drains To Harbour (DTH) programme empowers kura and communities by providing hands-on experiences in the environment. This learning is then applied, encouraging ākonga to put their knowledge into action within the community. The kaupapa is similar to that of the WBC programme, offering an urban version focusing on stormwater pollution sources and effects.
Both Western and Te Ao Māori world perspectives are used to provide interactive and holistic learning experiences that explore key environmental education concepts such as interdependence, sustainability, and pollution impacts. Through these experiences, participants develop a comprehensive understanding of their local urban waterways and the environment as a whole.
The programme was successfully piloted in the winter of 2006 in the Whangarei District and was adopted in the Nelson/Tasman Bay area in 2018. Tasman Bay Guardians is pleased to offer this programme to primary and intermediate kura (schools) across Te Tau Ihu.
