Our Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) programme at Nelson Intermediate has been making waves! Both the Wahine Toa (girls-only) and boys’ classes took part in snorkelling sessions at the school pool, building water confidence and mastering snorkelling techniques. These sessions prepared them for their much-anticipated snorkelling trip to Rotokura (Cable Bay, a non-protected area) and Horoirangi Marine Reserve (a protected area).

The Rotokura snorkel was a fantastic success! With eagle eyes and sharp observation skills, students spotted eagle rays, seahorses, banded wrasse, kina, pāua, sea cucumbers, and more. Their excitement and curiosity were evident as they explored the underwater environment, applying the skills learned during their pool sessions.

Unfortunately, due to rough sea conditions and unsuitable weather, the more exposed snorkel at Horoirangi Marine Reserve had to be cancelled at the last minute. While disappointing, it also provided an unexpected but valuable lesson about water safety and the importance of adapting plans based on environmental conditions—a crucial aspect of marine exploration.

Despite the weather setback, students gained unforgettable experiences, new snorkelling skills, and a deeper understanding of the marine environment. We’re incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and adaptability and look forward to seeing how they use this knowledge in future environmental action projects.
