From families with buckets to volunteers hauling tyres, the annual Tāhunanui Beach Clean-Up brought the community together on Saturday 19 September. Organised by Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park, the event saw 218 volunteers collect 485 kg of rubbish from the beach and surrounding area.
Tasman Bay Guardians was proud to partner with the holiday park again this year. As bags and buckets came in, our team helped weigh and sort everything collected. Among the more surprising finds were a television, tyres, a bike frame and two buoys. Thanks to careful sorting, 135 kg of the total was diverted from landfill, just over a quarter of all the rubbish collected! Enviro NZ then took care of the rubbish for responsible disposal.
This year’s total was also well below the more than 700 kg collected last year. That is an encouraging result, and we hope it reflects a growing awareness of the need to look after our environment. The amount found at a clean-up can vary from year to year, but seeing less rubbish alongside such a strong volunteer turnout gives us plenty to feel positive about.
The smaller items matter as much as the unusual finds. A chippy packet dropped near the beach can be blown or washed into the sea. Plastic packaging does not simply disappear: it can persist for a long time and break into tiny pieces that are difficult to remove. There is no reliable single number of years for a soft plastic wrapper to break down, however a discarded chip packet can remain in the environment for decades (some say 100 years), gradually breaking into smaller and smaller pieces.
Once rubbish reaches the ocean, marine animals can mistake plastic for food or become tangled in larger pieces of debris. Picking it up on land helps prevent those harms before they happen.
It took many hands to make the morning happen. Mitre 10 MEGA Nelson Helping Hands kept volunteers going with a sausage sizzle, while the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club joined in to support the day. Popcycle provided frozen treats, and Nelson Classic Car Museum, Pic’s Peanut Butter, Natureland Zoo, Cycle Nelson and Night ’n Day Tāhunanui contributed goodies and spot prizes.
